The highly publicised court case involving popular Zimbabwean socialite Mai Jeremaya (real name: Ashley Masendeke) took a surprising turn this week as the trial continued before a packed courtroom. A New Twist: Friend’s Testimony Alters the Dynamics

In a development that has sent shock waves through the ongoing proceedings, a close friend of Mai Jeremaya appeared before the court on Tuesday and gave testimony that seemed to contradict parts of Mai Jeremaya’s account. The friend, whose identity has been protected for security reasons, told the court that she was with Mai Jeremaya earlier on the night in question. According to her statement, Mai Jeremaya allegedly discussed plans to meet with the two men and hinted at expecting financial gain from the encounter.

The friend further testified that Mai Jeremaya had confided in her about arranging the meeting and that there was an understanding that money would change hands. “She spoke of needing quick money that night,” the friend revealed. “What she told me later didn’t match what I heard earlier in the evening.”

This testimony appeared to bolster the defence's argument that the meeting was prearranged and transactional in nature, with the dispute arising only after disagreements over payment.

Mai Jeremaya’s Own Testimony: A Plea for Protection

Earlier during the trial, Mai Jeremaya delivered an emotional testimony in which she insisted that she had pleaded with one of the accused to use protection during the assault — an admission that shocked many and raised further questions about the events of the night. She claimed that despite her pleas, she was overpowered and threatened, and was later left traumatised by the ordeal.

The defence has consistently argued that the two men engaged in consensual sex-for-money with Mai Jeremaya, who later sought to inflate the agreed price from US$20 to as much as US$500. They further contend that the charges arose as a form of retaliation when their client refused to pay the additional sum.
