Middle East Tensions Hit Local Pumps: ZERA Hikes Fuel Prices

ZERA Hikes Fuel Caps Following Middle East Volatility

The Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA) has announced a significant upward revision of fuel prices effective March 5, 2026, as the domestic market reacts to a spike in global crude oil costs.

New Fuel Pricing Schedule

In its latest pricing schedule, ZERA set the maximum pump price for Diesel 50 at US$1.77 per litre, up from US$1.52, representing a 16.4% increase. Petrol (Blend E5) rose by 9.6%, moving from US$1.56 to US$1.71 per litre.

These adjustments reflect the immediate pressure on the domestic procurement chain following the jump in global oil benchmarks.

Geopolitical Drivers

The price surge follows intense geopolitical instability. Global oil benchmarks jumped after joint military actions against Iranian infrastructure, sparking fears of a prolonged supply disruption in the Strait of Hormuz—a critical artery for the world’s oil supply.

Regional markets have felt the impact similarly; South Africa implemented a 71-cent hike, and Nigeria’s Dangote Refinery adjusted gantry prices by N100 to align with the new global reality.

Government Intervention

The Ministry of Energy and Power Development noted that the impact on Zimbabwean consumers would have been more severe without state intervention. To cushion the public, the government reduced the Strategic Reserve Levy.

Market analysts confirmed that without this fiscal adjustment, diesel would have peaked at US$1.90 and petrol at US$1.81. This intervention aims to prevent an even sharper spike in the cost of living.

Economic Implications

The private sector has expressed immediate concern over inflationary pressure. The Zimbabwe Passenger Transport Organisation (ZPTO) warned that commuter fares and long-distance haulage rates will likely be reviewed upward within the week.

Economists predict a "knock-on effect" on basic commodities. Manufacturers are expected to pass on increased distribution costs to consumers, potentially impacting the retail price of food and essential household items.

ZERA warns that selling above regulated limits remains a punishable offense.
