"The Fight for Equitable Distribution: Sonja Madzikanda’s Landmark Claim to the Chivayo Empire."

Zimbabwe’s $25 Million Divorce: The Sonja Madzikanda vs. Wicknell Chivayo Fallout

From private jets to polygamy proposals, the legal war between the business tycoon and his former partner has become a high-stakes drama involving record-breaking demands and explosive allegations.

The "Price of Freedom": Staggering Demands

Sonja Madzikanda’s legal team has filed for a record-breaking financial exit. At the core of her claim is a US$25 million lump-sum payment, intended to reflect her contribution to the household and the lifestyle she became accustomed to during the union.

In addition to this windfall, she is seeking:

  • US$40,000 Monthly Maintenance: For her personal upkeep until she remarries or dies.
  • US$1 Million Annual Allowance: Specifically earmarked for holidays, entertainment, and travel.
  • Educational Support: Full funding for their two children’s education at elite institutions.

The "spoils" of the marriage include some of the most expensive assets in the region. Sonja is claiming exclusive ownership of:

Luxury Fleet: A Rolls-Royce Phantom, Rolls-Royce Cullinan, Mercedes-Benz Maybach, Range Rover Autobiography, and a Lexus SUV.

Her real estate demands are equally massive, spanning three territories:

  • The primary matrimonial home in Gletwyn, Harare.
  • A luxury estate in Ballantyne Park.
  • A high-end apartment in Sandton, South Africa.

The Allegations & Personal Conflict

The legal filings are not just about money; they are deeply personal. Wicknell Chivayo has countered Sonja’s claims with serious allegations of domestic discord.

He alleges that he was a victim of physical and verbal abuse during the relationship. Furthermore, he claimed in public social media posts that Sonja "extorted" him for access to their children, alleging he had to pay thousands of dollars just to spend time with them following their split.

One of the most symbolic disputes involves a private aircraft. Sonja alleges that the jet was acquired during their union via a company where she was a co-director.

Social media observers noted a sharp change after the separation: the jet, which formerly featured branding associated with Sonja, was allegedly rebranded with the name "Moyo"—the name of Wicknell’s new partner. Sonja is challenging the legality of this transfer as part of her asset claim.

In a bizarre twist that stunned the public, Sonja suggested she would be open to a reconciliation if Wicknell entered into a polygamous arrangement. She proposed an "80/20" split where she would remain the senior wife/partner.

Wicknell’s response was swift and dismissive, publicly stating that the relationship was dead and buried, and characterizing her financial demands as "frivolous and predatory."

The Legal Technicality: A Real Marriage?

The entire case may hinge on one question: Were they legally married?

Wicknell argues that they only had an unregistered customary union (lobola was paid, but no certificate was issued under the Marriage Act). Under Zimbabwean law, this can make it difficult for a spouse to claim a 50/50 split of assets.

Sonja’s team, however, is arguing for the equitable distribution of the estate, claiming her presence and role in his life directly contributed to the accumulation of his vast wealth during their years together.

A Precedent-Setting Battle

As the High Court deliberates, this case serves as a landmark moment for marriage law and property rights in Zimbabwe.
